Desegregation
Change came about substantially as the result of the work of interest groups such as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, better known simply as the NAACP, which challenged the American conscience, lobbied government officials, and made court challenges. Strong moves against segregation also came from the federal government. In 1948, for example, President Harry Truman ordered the desegregation of the military. Around the same time, the U.S. Department of Justice was pursuing decisions for civil rights in federal courts. This, along with the work of the NAACP, led to one of the most influential Supreme Court cases of the twentieth century: Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka (1954). An enduring symbol of the Supreme Court’s power to override state laws, Brown began the process of desegregation in the Southern and some mid-Western states. The Court relied on the equal protection clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to strike down segregationist state laws that had been built on the foundation of the doctrine “separate but equal.” The Court instructed schools to desegregate with “all deliberate speed.”
